Reasons For Hope
In November 2024, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Loan Programs Office announced Project Horizon, a conditional commitment to loan up to $6.57 billion to U.S. EV maker Rivian to build a new electric SUV factory in Georgia. This project will make up to 400,000 vehicles, boost the U.S. EV manufacturing sector, reduce emissions, improve competitiveness vis-à-vis China’s fast-growing EV industry, and create 7,500 operations jobs by 2030!
“As one of a few American EV startups with light duty vehicles already on the road, Rivian’s Georgia facility will allow the company to reach production volumes that make its products more cost competitive and accelerate access to international markets.
At full capacity, the EVs manufactured at the facility are expected to yield an annual fuel consumption savings of approximately 146 million gallons of petroleum.”
— U.S. Department of Energy
“Our Federal manufacturing incentives are driving economic development across the State of Georgia.
I join all Federal, State, and local leaders in congratulating Rivian on this conditional Federal loan agreement and in celebrating yet another historic Federal investment in Georgia electric vehicle manufacturing.”
-U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff of Georgia
It’s up to Congress to determine whether vital funding like this will be sustained in upcoming budget cycles. And in an uncertain political environment, enlisting vocal Congressional champions to defend specific clean energy projects is likely to be increasingly important. Your voice can help show that American voters care about sustaining strategic cleantech investments.
