Reasons For Hope
The new JetWind Power company has installed America’s first-ever energy capturing pods (ECPs) at an airport in Dallas, Texas. They’re essentially localized wind turbines converting the gales created with aircraft takeoffs into energy. The city has already installed five pods at the airport, with another eight expected within three years for a total of thirteen. The airport’s two new charging stations powered by the ECPs have already received over 10,000 uses.
“The main goal of our project is to harness the consistent wind created by jets and convert it into an eco-friendly energy source.
What was once considered wasted energy can now benefit energy grids, ultimately promoting smarter and more sustainable infrastructure across the globe.”
— Dr. T.O. Souryal, founder of JetWind
This is a pretty small-scale clean energy source compared to the ongoing exponential growth of grid-scale solar and batteries worldwide, but it’s nonetheless a clever and efficient idea that deserves wider adoption. JetWind’s ECP technology could be deployed at any major source of “man-made wind” from airports to rail lines, and harnessing transport hubs’ by-product breezes is an idea worth spreading. The potential is considerable, with the Bureau of Transportation Statistics reporting that the U.S. has about 20,000 airports spread across all fifty states. Any state leader should know about and contemplate the applicability of this potential clean energy upgrade for transportation infrastructure in their jurisdiction.
Good initiative, but a better idea would be top stop the energy waste. Limiting the size of planes, truck, pick-ups, SUVs, etc... And making the "rich" pay their just part. Aren't they those who use all of that the most?
