Reasons For Hope
In a further development of the fast-spreading “balcony solar” movement in Germany, two German companies, Indielux and EPP Solar, have recently launched the world’s largest-ever “plug-and-play” solar array, with an output of up to 6 kW. Notably, small home solar arrays like this can be assembled and plugged in to feed power to the rest of the house through an ordinary wall socket using an AC/DC current inverter. This allows them to be installed without the need for an electrician’s expertise, allowing faster, easier, and up to 55% cheaper DIY deployment.
“Ready2plugin technology is the only technology with this output that allows existing electrical installations to be used via a safety plug in a way that complies with standards and is easy to use without the need for an electrician.”
-Indielux
There’s no plug-and-play solar array like this for sale in the United States yet, but American solar manufacturing is booming and it could be on the way soon. This would be a really helpful technology to help American families access decentralized, sovereign, cheap clean energy, especially since finding an electrician to install rooftop solar is often a struggle in many parts of the country due to increased demand.
Explicitly incentivizing plug-and-play solar in the U.S. - or just adding a few lines to state legal codes to clarify that plug-and-play arrays would be included in state-level rebate programs and allowed by state regulations - could help spur American companies to roll out plug-and-play solar products, enabling future innovations.
Tell your state leaders to support and incentivize plug-and-play solar and help bring it to America!
In the wake of the election, state- and local-level climate action have become more important than ever. What better way to meet the moment than with an action party?
Join us on Wednesday, December 4 at 7 pm ET to hear insights and ideas from individuals who have been working to advance the climate movement from their own unique corners of the professional world. Throughout the event, attendees will be able to send helpful resources and innovative approaches to their local and state legislators using the CAN app.
