I’m not big AG, and I love your Substack, but I’m 100% against factory engineered food. There is a symbiotic relationship between life forms and the other life forms they eat. It’s a complex and poorly understood relationship. A relationship co-developed over millennia. The consequences of subverting that relationship are unknown. It’s anthropocentrism at its worst.

I appreciate where you're coming from, but we're already living with a profoundly unnatural food system. Factory farming with heavy antibiotic use and CAFO feedlots is the origin of much human-consumed meat today. That system did not co-develop with humanity over millennia, it became widespread in the twentieth century, and it's contributing to problems from climate change to antibiotic-resistant bacteria to zoonotic disease outbreaks to mass animal suffering. As I see it, with a choice between Solein, and say, CAFO beef, both are profoundly unnatural, but Solein requires a whole lot less land, water, carbon emissions, disease risk, and suffering to produce the same amount of protein.

"Over and over again, new technologies, conditions, and systems are held to a disproportionately high standard, while existing technologies, conditions, and systems, even when they kill thousands or torture millions every year, are accepted as “that’s just the way it is.” We find it much easier to fear hypothetical dystopian futures than to acknowledge real-life dystopian presents."

Solein vs CAFO is a false dilemma fallacy. Permaculture and organic farming are proven “technologies”.
